Congratulations to Chef Kate Elliott of Juniper in Buffalo and her team on winning the 2009 Slice, Dice and Spice NY Championship!  It was an awesome competition at the New York Wine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua.   A great afternoon of frenzy, food, wine and fun as 3 pro chefs and their amateur teams came together vying to become the 2009  Slice, Dice and Spice NY Pro-Am Cook Off Champions.  It doesn’t get much better than this–or taste so good!  Check out the chefs and theFinger Lakes restaurants.  The winning team members included:

Hiking – Harriet Hollister Spencer Memorial Recreation Area, Honeoye  High in the hills between Canadice and Honeoye Lakes, you will enjoy spectacular views of Honeoye and the Rochester skyline

Hiking – Ontario Pathways in Phelps and Canandaigua Once an abandoned railroad line, this volunteer maintained countryside trail now has a canopy of trees and is an ideal location for birdwatchers and snowshoeing.

Slice, Dice & Spice in the Finger Lakes

tomato boyAttention all Foodies! We’ve got food, wine and six months of fun for you here in the Finger Lakes. The Slice, Dice and Spice NY farm market Ultimate Burger Challengeis coming to the Finger Lakes.  In August, there will be local chefs paired with amateur “foodies” to create the best Finger Lakes burger and side, using fresh and local ingredients available from local farm markets. There will be three competitions, one at each of these local farm markets, Canandaigua on August 8th, Victor on August 12th and Geneva on August 13th. farmers marketThe day of the farmer’s market competition, each pro-am team will be given a budget and a time limit for shopping, preparing and plating a Finger Lakes inspired meal. The team will also have a ‘market basket’ of additional spices, and other ingredients to help with the process; maybe a cheddar out of Waterloo or a BBQ sauce from Rochester—all will be locally made or grown in the Finger Lakes.

Following all 3 farm market competitions, the recipes will be re-created and posted to the Slice, Dice and Spice website and YOUcan vote online for The Ultimate Finger Lakes Burger! The winning recipe will be posted to the Slice, Dice and Spice website and the winning pro-am team will receive tickets to the Finals Iron-Chef Competition at the New York Wine & Culinary Center in October. Thoroughbred racing begins in the Finger Lakes in less than two weeks.  Finger Lakes Gaming and Racetrack opens April 17th for the 2009 horse racing season. 2009 marks the 48th consecutive year of thoroughbred racing at Finger Lakes. Located in the heart of the Finger Lakes region in Western New York, Finger Lakes Gaming & Racetrack has hosted over 62,000 horse races and entertained over 19 million fans since opening in 1962.  The horse racing season begins in mid-April and continues through November, Finger Lakes offers approximately 160 horse racing programs each season and simulcasting.
