The Little Lakes of the Finger Lakes

December 8, 2009

The Little Lakes of the Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes Region of New York State is made up of 11 long slender bodies of water that form a striking resemblance to the fingers of an outstretched hand.  While the larger of these lakes are most notable and probably most popular lakes, for many area visitors, there is a Great Finger Lakes Find in the “Little Finger Lakes” located in western Ontario County~ Honeoye, Canadice and Hemlock Lakes.

Honeoye Lake translated by the Native Americans means “Lying Finger”.  Honeoye Lake is 5 miles long, has a depth of 30 feet and is a prime fishing spot in the Finger Lakes.  Coming into the winter months, it is the most popular lake for ice fishing because the water freezes quickly and maintains its solid surface throughout the winter months to become a natural playground for ice fishing, skating, and even ice boating.

Cross Country Skiing fun

Many will enjoy the nearby Harriet Hollister Spencer Park state recreation area (be sure to click on this link to see a video of cross country skiing in the park).  You’ll find spectacular views of Honeoye Lake and the Rochester skyline to the north.  Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy miles of trails for hiking and in the winter it is a popular locale for cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and even dog-sledding.

Canadice Lake is peaceful and tranquil.  The lake is 3 miles long with a depth of 91 feet. Perhaps named with a bit of humor, the Native American translation is “Long Lake” and while the lake is quite tiny, it has some of the most natural beauty of all the Finger Lakes.  In fact, only car top boats are allowed on the lake keeping it pristine and therefore a popular spot for canoeing, kayaking, and relaxing.

Hemlock Lake is translated as “Sister Lake to Canadice” and surprising to many supplies drinking water to the city of Rochester. The lake is 8 miles long and has a depth of 96 feet. As the “sister lake” to Canadice its tree-lined undeveloped setting creates quite a contrasting experience to many of the larger, more populated lakes.  Both Hemlock and Canadice are remote and provide peaceful places to relax and enjoy nature.

Little Lakes Inn and Healing Center

At the end of a perfect day of fun in the Little Lakes, you can settle in for a great night’s sleep at The Little Lakes Inn & Healing Center, a completely restored Italianate-style inn, tucked in the cozy countryside along Honeoye Lake and one of the newest bed & breakfasts in the Finger Lakes.  Here you will find all the comforts of home and more.

Brings history to you--just by downloading

This is so fun!  Podcast 2 the Past is a brand new program that brings history into the 21st Century using technology as a fun and environmentally-friendly way to promote some of the architecturally unique and historically significant sites in Steuben and Ontario Counties in the Finger Lakes.  You’ll learn about famous people and places in quick ninety-second glimpses in to the past; people like Susan B. Anthony, who stood up for women’s rights long before it was fashionable, and Glenn H. Curtiss, whose mind not only shaped the world of flight during its inception, but continues to do so today; people like Levi Valentine, whose vision of providing others with convenience and variety gave birth to present day shopping malls, and Dr. Konstantin Frank, who revolutionized the wine industry in the Eastern US after it had experienced 300 years of failure.

Some of the sites explored  are Clifton Springs, known for its unique sulphur springs, Widmer Wine Cellars, and Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park in Ontario County, as well as Steuben County sites like Bully Hill Vineyards, Corning’s Gaffer District, and Rockwell Museum of Western Art, known as “the best of the west in the east.”

How does it work?  Each podcast consists of both audio and visual components that can be downloaded to a computer and transferred to MP3 players, such as an iPod, to take with you when you hit the road or when you arrive at your destination. In addition to offering podcasts for each of the eighteen featured sites, the Podcast 2 the Past Web site will provide supplemental information, photo galleries, links, and special getaway packages.

Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion  State Historic Park is now open for the season and this year’s garden season promises to be outstanding.  Perhaps the most well-known gardens in the Finger Lakes, Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion shares the legacy of Frederick and Mary Clark Thompson and their beautiful summer home, “Sonnenberg” or sunny hill.  After Mr. Thompson’s death in 1899, Mary Clark Thompson traveled throughout Asia and Europe and returned home to create her exquisite gardens from ideas she gathered around the world.  There are nine formal gardens in all.  From the elegance of the Italian Garden, the solitude of the Japanese Garden or the mystique of the Moolight Garden you’ll experience the art, the beauty and unique architecture  of Mrs. Thompson’s vision.

Finger Lakes Natural Health in Naples

Finger Lakes Natural Health in Naples

About a month ago, I had a massage at Finger Lakes Natural Health in Naples with Greta Selin-Love–my first visit. WOW is all I can say. What a great way to get rid of some stress; I was hooked. Today I was there for my second appointment. FLNH is a little office located on the second floor of a building Main St in Naples, very quaint cozy and Greta immediately made me feel comfortable. You can engage in light conversation or no conversation at all, whatever you prefer. For almost an hour I enjoyed soft music, warm blankets and a wonderful massage that relaxed me literally from head to toe. I asked Greta if anyone ever refuses to leave…because I came close! 🙂 I’ve booked my next appointment and for future reference to all my family–you’ll never have to ask me what I want for my birthday or holidays…here’s your answer…another massage! Appointments can be made at 585-374-8830. Need a special gift for someone? Gift certificates are available too (hint).
