There’s always a few things we look for as the first signs of spring in the Finger Lakes…the first robin, red winged blackbirds return, pussy willows or the first crocus to bloom, but for many, it’s the opening day of the fishing season on April 1st.
On March 19, 2009, local anglers will travel to Naples for the Annual Fish Shocking that is done by the DEC in the Naples Creek. DEC officials walk the creek with electric wands and the fish are “shocked” and caught in nets. The fish are then tagged, measured and weighed, giving eager fisherman the opportunity to view their next potential catch–or probably more commonly referred to as “the one that got away”! Be sure you have your camera.
The Annual Rainbow Trout Derby held in Naples, NY starts the season on April 1st with more than 500 anglers participating in this competition. May 23rd follows with the Annual National Lake Trout Derby in Geneva on Seneca Lake and on June 6th & 7th, is the Canandaigua Lake Trout Derby. Fisherman come from all over the United States and Canada to fish the waters of the Finger Lakes. Cash prizes are awarded in several categories.
