Pick a theme, build your own.

Apple Cider Molasses

Apple Cider Molasses

Have you ever heard of Apple Cider Molasses?  This all natural sweetener is made from 100% pure, fresh apple cider and it is made right here at Allens Hill Farm in Bloomfield, NY. If you are looking for an ingredient that will give a completely new taste to some of your tried and true recipes, this is it! With its unique flavor, substituting a small portion of your normal sweetener with apple cider molasses can have a profound impact on the flavor and texture of any dish.

Apple Cider Molasses™ was first used on the American frontier. Sugar was almost impossible to come by, and if available, prohibitively expensive. Resourceful frontier cooks used what was available to produce an alternative from products which were plentiful. Sweet cider was transformed into a sugar substitute for use in all kinds of cooking and baking. Watch Apple Cider Molasses being made~ Watch the Video

Allens Hill Farm is located in one of the most beautiful regions of the country; the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York. Rolling hills overlook long narrow lakes covered with farms and vineyards. Scenic old villages provide shopping, lodging and dining for those visiting the dozens of wineries. Be sure visit the farm and take home lots of fun recipes, specialty mixes, granola, syrups, glazes and more.

Rainbow Trout Catch in Naples Creek

There’s always a few things we look for as the first signs of spring in the Finger Lakes…the first robin, red winged blackbirds return, pussy willows or the first crocus to bloom, but for many, it’s the opening day of the fishing season on April 1st.

Fish Shocking in Naples Creek

Fish Shocking in Naples Creek

On March 19, 2009, local anglers will travel to Naples for the Annual Fish Shocking that is done by the DEC in the Naples Creek.  DEC officials walk the creek with electric wands and the fish are “shocked”  and caught in nets. The fish are then tagged, measured and weighed, giving eager fisherman the opportunity to view their next potential catch–or probably more commonly referred to as “the one that got away”! Be sure you have your camera.

The temperatures are rising and the sap is flowing in the Finger Lakes.  March is Maple Sugar month in New York.  Did you know that New York is the third largest maple sugar producer worldwide and the second largest producer of maple sugar in the United States?  There’s nothing that tastes any better than warm, home-made maple syrup over pancakes for breakfast. You can enjoy this too.  Maple Sugar Weekend is coming on the weekends of March 21 &  22, and March 27 & 28 with plenty of fun activities planned.  You’ll see demonstrations of collecting and boiling the sap, the production of the final maple sugar products and of course be able to taste too!
